A United Boeing 767-300, registration N664UA performing UA-992 from Newark,NJ (USA) to Zurich (Switzerland), was enroute at FL360 about 200nm southsouthwest of Gander,NL (Canada) when the crew received a "CABIN ALTITUDE" message and noticed cabin altitude was indicating 10,000 feet. The crew declared emergency and requested and was cleared for a descent to 10,000 feet, the aircraft levelled off at 10,000 feet 11 minutes later (average rate of descent 2400 fpm). The crew subsequently consulted with dispatch and company maintenance, it was determined that the #1 cabin pressure controller had failed but the #2 cabin pressure controller was available, cabin pressure was restored, the aircraft climbed to FL320 for the return to Newark where the aircraft landed safely about 3.5 hours after leaving FL360.

The Canadian TSB reported maintenance replaced the #1 cabin pressure controller and outflow valve.
