TAM A321 at Fortaleza on Sep 8th 2014, engine shut down in flight

A TAM Linhas Aereas Airbus A321-200, registration PT-MXD performing flight JJ-3325 from Fortaleza,CE to Sao Paulo Guarulhos,SP (Brazil), was in the initial climb out of Fortaleza's runway 13 when a loud bang was heard from the left hand engine (V2533). The crew stopped the climb at 2000 feet, shut the engine down and returned to Fortaleza for a safe landing on runway 13 about 20 minutes after departure.

Passengers reported there was a loud bang from the left side then the aircraft vibrated violently. The captain later announced a problem in the #1 engine.

An observer on the ground reported the aircraft was taxiing in with the left hand thrust reverser open and the right hand thrust reverser closed. There had been heavy sound from the engines during initial climb and final approach leading the observer to believe the left hand thrust reverser may have opened during initial climb.

The airline reported the aircraft returned to undergo unscheduled maintenance.
