Expressjet E145 near Winnipeg on Apr 19th 2014, two engine shut downs in flight

An Expressjet Embraer ERJ-145, registration N145587 performing flight EV-6005 from Chicago O'Hare,IL (USA) to Winnipeg,MB (Canada) with 47 people on board, was descending towards Winnipeg cleared to descend to 7000 feet when the crew moved the thrust levers to idle and heard a popping sound. The crew identified the sound related to an engine, however, all engine indications remained normal. When the thrust levers were again moved into idle, the right hand engine's (AE3007) Inter Turbine Temperature (ITT) spiked and the engine uncommandedly shut down. The crew declared emergency and worked the related checklists, the aircraft was cleared to descend to 4000 feet. While being vectored to join the approach the crew completed the checklist and restarted the engine, all engine indications were normal. The crew prepared for a normal approach to Winnipeg on both engines, when upon being cleared for the approach the right hand engine's ITT indications were lost and the engine again performed an uncommanded shutdown. The crew advised ATC and requested delay vectors to work the checklists, the approach clearance was cancelled. After completing the checklists the crew elected to leave engine #2 shut down and performed a safe single engine landing.

The Canadian TSB reported emergency services checked the aircraft, provided an "all clear" and the aircraft taxied to the apron without further incident.
