Delta B763 at Salt Lake City on Dec 19th 2013, slats asymmetry
A Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300, registration N143DA performing flight DL-1105 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX to Salt Lake City,UT (USA), was on final approach to Salt Lake City's runway 34R already in contact with tower when the crew requested to level off at 6000 feet due to flaps issues. The aircraft was vectored to continue along the localizer until over the aerodrome, the aircraft climbed and requested delay vectors at 10,000 feet to work the relevant checklists. Approach extended the downwind to about 40nm. After the aircraft was turned towards the aerodrome again the crew declared emergency reporting they could not resolve the flaps configuration. The aircraft landed safely on Salt Lake City's runway 34R at a higher than normal speed about 30 minutes after aborting the first approach and with a delay of 9 hours.
A passenger reported the crew indicated an asymmetric leading edge slat deployment. An off duty captain in the cabin was asked to visually check the flaps configuration, in the end it was decided to not change the current flaps configuration and commence the approach at about 20 knots above normal landing speed.
The aircraft, scheduled direct from Atlanta,GA to Salt Lake City had diverted to Dallas Ft. Worth,TX (USA) for a safe landing about 2 hours past scheduled landing time in Salt Lake City due to the closure of Salt Lake City Airport due to poor weather and a runway excursion, see Incident: Air Transport International B752 at Salt Lake City on Dec 19th 2013, runway excursion after landing. The aircraft continued to Salt Lake City after about 2.5 hours on the ground in Dallas.
