American Eagle E145 at Des Moines on Jan 1st 2014, flaps problem
An American Eagle Embraer ERJ-145, registration N632AE performing flight MQ-3578 from Dallas Ft. Worth,TX to Des Moines,IA (USA) with 38 people on board, was on approach to Des Moines' runway 05 and was instructed to expect a hold at waypoint "DELAY" for about 10 minutes, the runway was closed due to snow removal. A short time later approach advised they were able to get the aircraft in without delay and cleared the flight to descend to 3000 feet at waypoint DELAY. Descending through about 8500 feet the crew advised they had a bit of an issue and wanted to level off at 8000 feet, which was cleared. The crew subsequently inquired about the runway condition specifically asking whether there was any snow on the runway, but did not wait for the reply, declared emergency reporting a flap fail condition and decided to divert to Kansas City. The aircraft climbed to FL230, positioned for an approach to Kansas City's runway 01L at a higher speed than normal about 45 minutes after aborting the descent towards Des Moines.
The remainder of the flight and the return flight were cancelled.
