Lufthansa A388 enroute on Nov 29th 2013, fumes injure 8 crew members

A Lufthansa Airbus A380-800, registration D-AIME performing flight LH-752 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Johannesburg (South Africa), had suffered an engine problem on the previous rotation, after the return of the aircraft engine #3 (Trent 970) had been replaced. The aircraft subsequently departed for the flight to Johannesburg but suffered fumes events during the flight causing a number of cabin crew to feel unwell. The crew received abnormally high indications of oil quantities for engine #3 and deactivated the bleed air supply from engine #3, the fumes dissipated thereafter. The aircraft continued to Johannesburg for a safe landing. However, all cabin crew went to seek medical assistance in Johannesburg. Eight flight attendants were written sick a result and returned to Frankfurt off duty with the rest of the crew working normally on their scheduled return flight.

According to information The Aviation Herald received, an oil overfill of engine #3 was identified as cause of the fumes event. Lufthansa's medical service in Frankfurt is said to have diagnosed all 8 sick crew members with intoxication with unknown substances, according to the same information neither blood nor urine samples were taken however.

The accident aircraft returned to Frankfurt with bleed air #3 deactivated and with a delay of 3 hours.

The Aviation Herald is still waiting for a reply to questions submitted to Lufthansa's press department yesterday (Dec 2nd 2013).
