Swiss A343 at Zurich on Aug 7th 2014, could not retract left main gear

A Swiss Airbus A340-300, registration HB-JMH performing flight LX-92 from Zurich (Switzerland) to Sao Paulo Guarulhos,SP (Brazil) with 203 passengers, was climbing out of Zurich's runwa 34 when the crew stopped the climb at 6000 feet and entered a hold to troubleshoot a problem with the left hand main gear, that could not be retracted. The aircraft subsequently climbed to FL160 to dump fuel and returned to Zurich for a safe landing on runway 16 about one hour after departure.

A replacement Airbus A340-300 registration HB-JMJ departed Zurich the following morning and is estimated to reach Sao Paulo with a delay of 11 hours.

The airline confirmed the aircraft needed to return due to problems with the landing gear. The flight needed to be postponed to the next day due to the night curfew at Zurich Airport, however, there were not enough hotel rooms available to accomodate the passengers due to the European Athletics championship.

Passengers reported they needed to spend the night at the airport.
