Flybe DH8D near Manchester on Jun 20th 2014, engine shut down in flight

A Flybe Dash 8-400, registration G-JECO performing flight BE-998 from Southampton,EN to Belfast City,NI (UK), was enroute at FL240 about 20nm west of Manchester,EN (UK) when the crew needed to shut the right hand engine (PW150A) down and diverted to Manchester for a safe landing about 25 minutes later.

A passenger reported that there was a high pitch noise before the engine "over revved" and was shut down. The crew subsequently announced that they needed to shut the engine down due to a malfunction and they would divert to Manchester. The passengers were booked into hotels and continued the journey the next morning on flight BE-998A.

A replacement Dash 8-400 registration G-JECR reached Belfast the next morning with a delay of 13.5 hours.
