Dana MD83 near Port Harcourt on Oct 6th 2013, engine shut down in flight by itself

A Dana Air McDonnell Douglas MD-83, flight 9J-348 from Port Harcourt to Lagos (Nigeria), was climbing out of Port Harcourt about 38nm from the aerodrome when one of the engines shut down uncommandedly. The crew returned to Port Harcourt for a safe landing.

The occurrence prompted the authorities of Nigeria to suspend the air operators certificate (AOC) of Dana Air another time in the wake of the crash at Lagos, see Crash: Dana MD83 at Lagos on Jun 3rd 2012, collided with power line on approach following dual engine failure.

The Nigerian AIB reported in their second preliminary report into the crash, that the occurrence of Oct 6th 2013 had been very similiar to the events leading to the crash of 5N-RAM. Engine tear downs with the focus on the engines' fuel systems are under way. The AIB wrote: "AIB is currently investigating in-depth systematic and safety issues associated with this second incident vis-à-vis, the crashed sister ship, 5N-RAM. The safety actions adopted by the operator to redress the findings are being monitored and analyzed."
