Jazz DH8D at Edmonton on Nov 6th 2014, right main gear collapse on landing, runway excursion, propeller blade(s) impacted fusela
A Jazz de Havilland Dash 8-400, registration C-GGBF performing flight QK-8481 from Calgary,AB to Grande Prairie,AB (Canada) with 71 passengers and 4 crew, was climbing out of Calgary when the crew stopped the climb at 4000 feet due to a technical problem. The crew subsequently decided to divert to Edmonton due to cross winds at Calgary, climbed the aircraft to 13,000 feet and positioned for a landing on Edmonton's runway 02. At 20:38L (03:28Z) the aircraft came to a stop off the right hand side of the runway with the right hand gear collapsed resting on its nose gear, left main gear and the right hand wing tip, the right hand propeller contacted ground with all blades separating, at least one impacting the fuselage. Three passengers received minor injuries, the aircraft sustained substantial damage.
Canada's Transportation Safety Board have dispatched a team of investigators to Edmonton to investigate a landing incident.
NAV Canada reported the crew reported a blown tyre after departure from Calgary. The aircraft diverted to Edmonton but during touchdown the right hand main gear collapsed. The runway is estimated to remain closed until Nov 8th 07:00Z.
Passengers reported the right hand gear did extend on approach to Edmonton, the blown tyre was clearly visible there, it is unknown why the gear collapsed, the propeller blades did not penetrate the cabin, however, due to the blade impact to the side of the fuselage the entire inside wall separated and hit passengers.
The Aviation Herald learned that the following day the aircraft was jacked up, the right main gear fully extended again and holding the aircraft, the aircraft was subsequently towed to a maintenance hangar.
On Nov 13th 2014 the Canadian TSB reported the crew declared emergency after departure from Calgary due to a blown #3 tyre and diverted to Edmonton where emergency services were in their stand by positions. Upon touchdown in Edmonton the right main gear collapsed, all of the righ hand propeller blades sheared off, one penetrated the cabin wall. The aircraft came to a stop off the right hand side of the runway surface. An emergency evacuation was conducted. 4 minor injuries are being reported. The TSB have opened an investigation.
